No survey has been carried out in Turkey. Turan (1984) stated that the otter had a wide distribution and was found in almost every river and lake around the Black Sea. The Rivers Dide, Fırat, Aras and Kura in Anatolia are mentioned as being of importance, as are the Seyhan, Ceyhan, Asi, Göksu and Aksu which are in the area of the Aegean Sea. The species is also recorded from around Cannakale on the north-west coast.
